On Wednesday, U.S. officials announced that Israeli and Hamas have come to a tentative agreement on a cease-fire and the release of hostages, halting the brutal warfare that has decimated the Gaza Strip. The New York Times reports that the first phase of the deal will take six weeks, during which Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages taken by Hamas. Though Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office says that the final details are still being hammered out, celebrations have already begun as an end to the deadly conflict appears to be on the horizon.
