RED DYE: The federal Food and Drug Administration is banning the use of a red food coloring after it was found to cause cancer in lab rats. The dye, known as Red. No. 3, was not found to induce cancer in humans but federal law allows the agency to revoke authorization of food additives if they are found to lead to malignancies in either humans or animals. The dye, which produces a bright red color in food, is believed to be as widely used as other food coloring, according to the FDA. Companies have until January 15, 2027 to discontinue the dye in food products and until January 18, 2028 in pharmaceuticals.
COLD TIPS: The state Department of Health is warning New Yorkers about the dangers of cold weather as temperatures continue to dip below freezing in parts of the state. In a statement Wednesday, the department cautioned residents about the risk of hypothermia and frostbite, particularly to infants, older adults and people who work outside. People with diabetes or under intoxication are also at particular risk. Cold weather can also exacerbate breathing and heart disorders like asthma and high blood pressure. The department also warned of the dangers of winter driving conditions and carbon monoxide poisoning that can come with improperly installed or placed heating devices.
