A Guide to Good Hot Chocolate in Brooklyn

There’s a chill outside, which means it’s time to grab a warm drink. And what better beverage to indulge in at this time of the year than hot chocolate? Whether you like your hot cocoa with warm whole milk (I’m an oat milk girl myself) or toasted marshmallows, there’s a spot to get the perfect cup for you somewhere in Brooklyn.

BKMAG schlepped to numerous shops in search of hot cocoa worth our (and your) money. It was, as you might imagine, a daunting task, but we returned with a list of good options. Here are the best places to get a warm, chocolatey hug in a mug in Brooklyn.

Clinton St. Baking Co. at Time Out Market
Address: 55 Water St.
Go for: Peppermint hot chocolate

If you’re in the mood for classic hot cocoa taste with a twist, order the peppermint hot chocolate at Clinton St. Baking Co. at the Time Out Market. The drink is made with all the classic ingredients, including whipped cream, and peppermint is added for flavor. Although I wish the drink were a bit thicker, the peppermint hot chocolate still gets the job done.

Jacques Torres Chocolate – Dumbo
Address: 66 Water St.
Go for: Wicked Hot Chocolate

You should only get a cup of hot chocolate from Jacques Torres if you’re a die-hard dark chocolate stan, and even then, I’d really only recommend the Wicked Hot Chocolate. This decadent beverage is a blend of dark chocolate and unique spices. It’s velvety, indulgent, as thick as hot cocoa should be, and just spicy enough to warm your chest on a cold day.

Sisters
Address: 900 Fulton St.
Go for: Regular hot cocoa

While some might be used to milk chocolate as the main flavor in good hot chocolate, a lot of places around Brooklyn flip the script, including Sisters in Clinton Hill. If you like your drink a little on the thinner side, with a less sugary taste, you’ll love what they have to offer.

Sunday in Brooklyn
Address: 348 Wythe Ave.
Go for: Hot chocolate with oat milk

Sunday in Brooklyn is a cute brunch spot in Williamsburg with festive decor for the holiday season. Their hot chocolate adds to the atmosphere and is a nice, warm drink on a freezing day. The toasted marshmallow being in the drink instead of on top would have made it much better, but it’s still a great option with a cinnamon flavor other places couldn’t capture.

Serendipity BK
Address: 229 S. 3rd St.
Go for: Frozen hot chocolate with oat milk

I know what you’re thinking: It’s winter—why would I want a frozen drink when it’s freezing? Well, because this drink is worth it. The frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity BK in Williamsburg tastes just like a milkshake with an added cinnamon flavor. The regular hot cocoa is good, too, but the frozen option is the real standout.

The Good Batch Bakery
Address: 936 Fulton St.
Go for: Hot chocolate with oat milk

The Good Batch Bakery was one of the few places where the hot cocoa was actually steaming hot and you needed a second for it to cool down before tasting it. This spot is the best option for people who prefer alternative milks in their hot cocoa. Personally, I think oat milk adds some sweetness to the drink that teases out its other flavors.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters
Address: 212b Pacific St.
Go for: Hot chocolate with oat milk

Stepping into Stumptown Coffee Roasters feels like stepping onto a set in a Harry Potter film, but once you get over that, it’s also a very cute cafe that has excellent hot cocoa. Roasters’ version is actually most like a classic hot chocolate, with a thick, creamy, and sweet flavor that makes it fun to drink and leaves you unashamed to wear a milk mustache.

The Chocolate Room
Address: 269 Court St.
Go for: White chocolate hot cocoa

You’ll be drinking nothing but pure bliss when you order the white chocolate hot cocoa at the Chocolate Room. The sweet treat blends the finest white chocolate with steamed milk to create one of the creamiest drinks in the borough. Topped with whipped cream, it’s as visually appealing as it is delicious.

Sugar Hill Creamery at Time Out Market
Address: 55 Water St.
Go for: Ice cream hot chocolate

One of the most unique twists on hot cocoa is at the Sugar Hill Creamery outpost at the Time Out Market in Dumbo. The beverage is made with ice cream and chocolate, and topped with marshmallow fluff and chocolate shavings. This is hands down the second-best hot cocoa on this list. It’s legit what hot cocoa should taste like, because it tastes like heaven, happiness, and everything good in the world.

Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain
Address: 513 Henry St.
Go for: S’more hot chocolate

If someone could only recommend one place on this list, I’m confident they’d choose Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain in Cobble Hill. This shop is perfect for a cute date or an outing with friends on a Sunday. They have a variety of hot chocolate options, including chai hot chocolate, but the one item everyone should try is the s’more hot cocoa. This delightful concoction includes fudge, marshmallows, and graham crackers that melt into the drink. Served in a vintage-inspired mug, the s’more hot cocoa is warm and fuzzy with every sip.
