HOSPITAL LEADER DIES: Dr. Thomas Q. Morris, former president and CEO of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, died on Dec. 28 at 91 years old, according to his obituary. Morris led the health system from 1985 to 1990, helping to grow New York-Presbyterian’s presence in Upper Manhattan and overseeing the 1988 opening of Allen Hospital in Inwood. The former executive held several leadership roles at New York-Presbyterian and Columbia University’s medical school over the course of his 50-year tenure, including chair of the department of medicine, vice dean and senior associate vice president for health sciences.

CARDIAC CARE EXPANSION: Montefiore Medical Center has filed plans to expand its coronary care unit to accommodate rising rates of heart attacks and other cardiac diseases in the Bronx. The hospital is planning to convert four medical-surgical beds to coronary care beds, expanding its cardiac unit from 12 to 16 beds, according to an application filed to the Health Department on Tuesday. Montefiore expects the project to cost approximately $5 million.

NEW CLINICS: Brownsville-based Doral Medical and Multispecialty Facility is embarking upon a $1 million expansion of extension clinics in the area. The center, based at 1797 Pitkin Ave., plans to add a new clinic at 65-06 Myrtle Ave., which will provide primary care, psychiatry, cardiology and a number of other services, according to a filing with the state. Another clinic will be opened at 43 Jamaica Ave. offering primary care, and a third will open at 1220 East New York Ave. with a wider range of programs.
