Extell plans for more demolition at former Disney campus on the UWS

Extell Development is looking to tear down more of the former Disney/ABC campus on the Upper West Side.

The Gary Barnett-led firm recently filed demolition permits with the Department of Buildings for 77 W. 66th St. and 54 W. 67th St. by Lincoln Square. Both addresses appear to be part of a property between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West that spans about 288,000 square feet and overall stands 22 stories and 292 feet tall, according to the demolition filings and city records.

Extell purchased the sprawling campus from Silverstein Properties in 2022 for $931 million. Silverstein had purchased it in 2018 for $980 million from Disney as part of the media company’s planned move of its New York headquarters to Hudson Square.

Extell had filed plans late last year for residential buildings at two other sites on the campus. A 9-story, 90-foot-tall tower at 30 W. 67th St. would span roughly 76,000 square feet with 50 residential units, while a 7-story, 90-foot-tall tower at 7 W. 66th St. would span roughly 44,000 square feet and have 31 residential units. At least some units in both properties would be affordable housing.

It is unclear if Extell’s latest demolition plans are meant to make way for another residential building on the campus. A representative for the firm did not respond to a request for comment by press time.

Extell has long been one of the city’s more prominent developers and lately seems to be on a particularly active streak. The company recently bought the office building at 15 W. 46th St. for about $24.8 million and sold a retail condo on Billionaires Row for $25 million. It is also planning a mixed-use tower at 655 Madison Ave. that would stand 37 stories tall as well as a tower to contain Manhattan’s first Ikea at 574 Fifth Ave. that would stand 32 stories tall.
