The New York Jets have hired a former player to be their next head coach.
Aaron Glenn, the current defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions and a Jets alum, is expected to become the team’s new leader, ESPN reported Wednesday. The Jets drafted Glenn 12th overall in the 1994 NFL Draft, and he spent eight years in New York as a defensive back.
Glenn has been the defensive coordinator in Detroit for the last four years. He helped reignite the Lions team and turn their defense from one of the league’s worst to best.
The 52-year-old hire will replace interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, formerly the Jets defensive coordinator who stepped into the role after the team fired head coach Robert Saleh in October. Saleh was hired in 2021 and ended with a 20-36 record as the team’s head coach. Ulbrich is set to become the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator next year.
The Jets finished the 2024 season 5-12, a disappointing result for a team that had high hopes this year with the return of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Jets have not made it to the playoffs since 2010, the longest drought in the NFL.
