“I think this election is about who can put the city back together, and I don’t think people are going to buy the woe-is-me Eric Adams story,” mayoral candidate Scott Stringer said as he sat down with FAQ NYC hosts Christina Greer, Katie Honan and Harry Siegel at The City’s offices on Tuesday to make his case. “Maybe Trump will buy it, but I don’t think voters are going to buy it.”

In a wide-ranging conversation —the first in a series with all of the declared candidates — the former comptroller who lost to Adams in the 2021 primary explained what he’s been doing since then as “a New Yorker without portfolio,” laid out his view of a city in crisis (“we have a crime issue, and it’s real”), and pitched himself as the right person to connect with voters and to turn things around:
“Having experience and a record of competence actually meets the moment. People want somebody who can walk into City Hall and know exactly what they’re doing. God forbid, one of us is having an episodic medical event and you rush to the hospital. Let’s say you’re having a heart problem. You want the heart doctor. You want someone that you know has done this before. You don’t call the plastic surgeon in the Hamptons,” he said.

“You want somebody who has great competence and accomplishment, and that is something that I think differentiates me from the field of good people.”
