LISTEN: Zellnor Myrie Says ‘We Cannot Cower in This Moment’

“I’ve always represented a community that knew we could hold two things together at the same time: that we want to hold officers accountable when they step over the line but also that we need them as part of our public safety ecosystem,” state Senator and mayoral candidate Zellnor Myrie said as he sat down with FAQ NYC hosts Christina Greer, Katie Honan and Harry Siegel at The City’s offices on Tuesday to make his case.

“I’ve never been a defund-the-police Democrat, because my community has never been a defund-the-police community. We have always asked for police officers, but my mom doesn’t want her son getting pepper sprayed. She wants to feel safe, and that is what this plan is about.”

In a wide-ranging interview, the second in a series with each of the mayoral candidates — Myrie dug into how it has been embarrassing for a city of immigrants to have a mayor in Eric Adams who’s chosen to “to bend the knee, play for a pardon and be unwilling to criticize the President when he’s coming after vulnerable New Yorkers,” his plan to get 700,00 new housing units built over 10 years — “We used to do this in the city. We used to build 70,000 units a year. We built the Empire State Building in 13 months, 100 years ago. Don’t tell me we can’t do big things anymore. This is New York City” — and much more.
