Rare Snowy Owl Spotted in Brooklyn Park

A snowy owl has been seen in Brooklyn’s Shirley Chisholm State Park.

The snowy owl, recognized for its white feathers and yellow eyes, first appeared late Saturday afternoon at the nature preserve, the New York Post reports. David Barrett, founder of Manhattan Bird Alert, told the outlet that the sighting was the first of its kind since 2022. It owed, he explained, to a productive breeding season that shifted the birds’ migration pattern.

News of the snowy owl’s visit to the park drew throngs of birders, who posted evidence of it to social media.

My love for OwlsThe gorgeous Snowy Owl in Shirley Chisholm State Park on New Year’s Day 2025 posing by the Gull Trail signage. I think the park should now make a Snowy Owl Trail signage, don’t you agree? #snowyowl #owl #birds #birdwatching #wildlife #newyearsday2025 pic.twitter.com/zdPPBIbhCE

A snowy owl was seen on floating barge in Bay Ridge last month but flew away before it could be more heavily documented.
