Looking for something to do on New Year’s Eve Eve Eve Eve Eve? We’ve got you covered.
It’s the last weekend of 2024, so it’s worth reflecting on the past. We’ve got many possible pasts for you to reflect on this weekend. If you’re a roots music fan of a certain age, you undoubtedly worshipped at the church of the Felice Brothers in the mid- to late aughts. This weekend, Ian, James, and the gang will be back in our beloved borough.
For those who want to remember a more mainstream version of the Naughties, get your flip phones out of the drawer and head to Brooklyn Monarch for their Back to the 2000s party. And if that’s reaching a little far back for you, there’s a 2010s-themed throwback party at Polygon BK.
We’ve also included some events you probably should have gone to already, but probably haven’t, including the Botanic Garden’s incredible Lightscape display and Luna Park’s Frost Fest.
No matter how you spend this weekend, enjoy it. And remember to save some of that party energy for New Year’s Eve, which inexplicably falls on a Tuesday this year. Who can we talk to about that?
Friday, December 27
New Orleans Jazz with Konstantin & the Konstellation! @ St. Mazie
10 p.m.
St. Mazie is a great bar and supper club in Williamsburg—you can tell it’s classy because of the use of the term “supper club.” Konstantin & the Konstellation is an NYC-based band that plays New Orleans jazz, which is exactly the type of feel-good music you need to help you gear up for whatever disasters 2025 is sure to bring.
The Felice Brothers & Merce Lemon @ Brooklyn Bowl
8 p.m.
You may have first heard of the Felice Brothers when they opened for Bright Eyes circa 2007. Or perhaps you’re cooler than the rest of us and saw them busking in their early days. It’s time to leave all that indie I-heard-it-first stuff behind, since we all just get our music from TikTok these days. But you should still see the show—the band’s 2024 album Valley of Abandoned Songs shows they haven’t lost a step.
Back to the 2000s: Y2K Night @ the Brooklyn Monarch
11 p.m.
A Y2K-themed party with a costume contest? It’s a no-brainer. Even if you don’t go shopping, you undoubtedly have the perfect outfit somewhere in the back of your closet.
Frost Fest @ Luna Park
Through Jan. 1
All the wonder and magic of Coney Island, plus holiday lights, decorations, rides, and a visit from Santa himself, makes this the perfect ending to your holiday season.
Celebrate Kwanzaa @ Brooklyn Children’s Museum
Through Dec. 30
The city’s largest Kwanzaa family event returns to BK with five days’ worth of activities. It’s only 15 bucks, and children under 1 are free.
Lightscape @ Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Through Jan. 5
Lightscape bills itself as “NYC’s most dazzling light show,” and it’s not an exaggeration. The entire Botanic Garden is given over to incredible displays that mix nature and spectacle in ways that truly have to be seen to be believed. Go once, and it’ll quickly become a holiday tradition.
Saturday, December 28
Restless Fest: NYE Edition @ the Brooklyn Monarch
4 p.m.
Normally, we wouldn’t recommend the same venue two days in a row, but this is special. Restless Shows is putting on this absolutely stacked end-of-year edition of their Restless Fest. They have a good track record: Their August festival had Nettspend, who is blowing up. This one has a great bill, and most notably the incredible RXKNephew will be performing, which alone makes this a can’t-miss event.
2010s Throwback Party @ Polygon BK
11 p.m.
If the aughts aren’t your thing, try something of a slightly more recent vintage. How close will these throwback parties get to the present? Will January 2025 see a “Three Weeks Ago Throwback Party”? We can only hope.
Danny Tenaglia – Hard & Soul Holiday Party @ Elsewhere
10 p.m.
If you were alive and partying in New York in the ‘90s, DJ Danny Tenaglia’s name should be all too familiar to you. He was at the Roxy, Twilo, and the Tunnel. He’s continued since then, still touring after 30 years of spinning. Now you can see him just over the river from his old stomping grounds.
Sunday, December 29
Teksupport 10: Carl Craig, Moodymann, Kaytranada, & more @ Brooklyn Storehouse
9 p.m.
Celebrate underground event curator Teksupport reaching the decade mark with maybe the most high-profile of their series of celebrations. You can see Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig performing with another Motor City legend, Moodymann. And you can watch a Kaytranada DJ set—you already know how those go down.
Underground Brooklyn: Exploring Brooklyn’s Oldest Subway Stations
11 a.m.
You can explore the hidden secrets of the borough’s transit system with some real adventurers—the New York Adventure Club. If you take the tour, you’ll see your time on the MTA in a whole new light. Plus, they promise that you’ll be allowed to moonwalk—or at least try to—in the exact spot where the “Bad” video was shot.
The Muppet Christmas Carol @ Nitehawk Cinema Williamsburg
11:15 a.m.
Michael Caine as Scrooge, playing alongside Muppets: What else do you need to know? Get yourself to the matinée of this seasonal classic, the first—and among the best—of the post-Jim Henson Muppets projects.
