New York Jets players feel owner Woody Johnson does not contribute to a positive team culture, is only somewhat committed to building a competitive team and is relatively unwilling to invest in facilities.
That’s according to a survey of nearly all active NFL players conducted by the National Football League Players Association, the union representing NFL players. The survey is designed to “highlight positive teams, identify areas that could use improvement and highlight best practices and standards” off the field.
Players described “top-down problems” with the Jets organization. Johnson received an “F” grade from his players, down from a B- last year. No other team flunked their owner.
The players association report graded teams in 10 other categories, including locker room conditions, team travel accommodations, access to dieticians and nutritionists, and head coach performance. The association surveyed 1,695 NFL players about their own team. It did not specify how many of those played for the Jets, though that 1,695 figure averages to about 53 players per team, or roughly the number of players on an active roster at any given time.
The Jets ranked 29th overall out of the 32 NFL teams, down from last year’s 21st ranking. “Rather than addressing concerns (from last season), players believed that management responded to feedback by making conditions worse,” the report said.
The team did not respond to a request for comment.
Johnson’s failing grade comes after a 2024 season in which the team as a whole failed their fans. The Jets finished 5-12 despite the return of star quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Meanwhile, the New York Giants, which finished the season 3-14, dropped from eighth last year to 20th in the latest report. Giants owner John Mara received a C+ grade.
“The Giants’ highest-rated categories are their strength coaches and head coach Brian Daboll,” the report said. “Areas needing improvement include a dated locker room, outdated hot and cold tubs, and better communication between the team and players’ families.”
