Doctors Without Borders maintained its No. 1 spot on Crain’s list of largest health care nonprofits in New York with $856.4 million in 2023 expenses, up an impressive 32% from 2022.
However, that jump is eclipsed by Project Orbis International’s 98% surge. The organization, which focuses on the prevention and treatment of blindness, jumped six spots on the list and now ranks No. 10 with $265.6 million in expenses.
On average, the 25 health care nonprofits on the list (which exclude hospitals, health systems, home health care, rehabilitation centers, medical practice groups, research institutions and universities) saw an average 14% bump in expenses from 2022 to 2023. They also saw revenue grow an average of 4.3%.
All but one nonprofit on the list saw an increase in expenses. Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which dropped three spots to No. 6, saw a 25.6% decrease in expenses, down to $386.1 million.
Meanwhile, New York Blood Center maintains its No. 2 ranking from last year with $599.5 million in expenses, up 9.4%. And CMMB (Catholic Medical Mission Board Inc.) claims the No. 3 spot with $463 million, up 8%.
Most expenses across the list (an average of 81%) were allocated to programming, while only an average 5.4% of expenses were allocated to fundraising. Combined, these 25 health care nonprofits had nearly $6.5 billion in expenses and $6.2 billion in revenue in 2023.
