Actor Joel Grey has bowed out of his West Village home.
A star of the musical Cabaret who won both a Tony and an Oscar for his portrayal of the production’s perpetually grinning club emcee in Roaring ’20s Germany, Grey has sold his West Street condo unit for $7.6 million, according to a deed that appeared in the city register Tuesday.
Grey, 92, bought the 3,100-square-foot apartment, which has one bedroom, two baths and a line of casement windows overlooking the Hudson River, in 1999 for $1.6 million from developer Tamarkin Co., based on the register.
The apartment, which also features an open kitchen with a breakfast nook, concrete columns and ceilings, and a bedroom that has been doing double duty as a home office, appears to have been shopped around in an off-market whisper listing, so there are no public records indicating how long Grey has been trying to sell it.
The condo unit went into contract Dec. 20 and closed Feb. 11, according to the register.
The buyer was a shell company, Bring It Hudson LLC, which was represented by Shephard Tinglof & Associates, a Los Angeles talent agency whose clients include Ben Stiller, Jon Favreau and Kurt Russell.
The building, an 11-story, nine-unit offering at West 12th Street that was among the first luxury condos to rise on the now-exclusive Far West Side, has an artsy pedigree. Celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz owned a work-studio with a nearly identical layout there for a couple of years before unloading it in the fall for $8 million.
In 1967 Grey snagged a Tony for Cabaret, a story of shenanigans at Berlin’s Kit Kat Club, and later won an Oscar for the 1972 movie version of the musical. The Oscar, for best supporting actor, had Grey beating out three stars of The Godfather: Robert Duvall, Al Pacino and James Caan.
A photographer and writer in recent years, Grey is also the father of Jennifer Grey of Dirty Dancing fame, an actor also known for a performance rich with catchy songs.
Tamer Howard, the Corcoran Group broker handling the sale, had no comment by press time.
