Affordable housing developer Camber Property Group has acquired the site of an Orthodox Jewish chapel in Borough Park for just over $12 million, records show, likely planning to redevelop the property into residential units.
The Kips Bay-based builder, whose portfolio includes mixed-income housing, scooped up 4218 Ft. Hamilton Parkway for $12.2 million, according to a deed that appeared in the city register Thursday. The now-boarded-up 2-story building, between 42nd and 43rd streets in the heavily Orthodox Jewish southern Brooklyn neighborhood, was once occupied by the funeral home Shomrei Hachomos Orthodox Chapels.
Rick Gropper, co-founder and principal of Camber Property Group — and in 2021 a Crain’s 40 Under 40 honoree — signed the deed on behalf of the buyer under the limited liability company FSFHP Owner, records show.
Camber, which did not return a request for comment by press time, purchased the site from Midtown-based investment firm Maguire Capital Partners, records show. No demolition or other permits have been filed yet for the lot, which spans about 10,000 square feet and is zoned for medium-density residential use, according to city records.
Marvin Azrak, founder and principal of Maguire, signed the deed on behalf of the seller, records show. Azrak declined to comment when reached by phone Friday. Last year Azrak sold a 4,100-square-foot house in Midwood for $9.5 million, making it one of the priciest single-family deals in Brooklyn in 2024. Just weeks later he purchased a similarly detached dwelling with a driveway about a 10-minute drive away on East Second Street for $9.4 million, Crain’s previously reported.
Camber’s other projects throughout the city include Stevenson Square, a $1 billion development in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx with nearly 1,000 affordable housing units; 2000 Valentine, another affordable housing development in Fordham Heights in the Bronx; and Sutter Crossing, a mixed-use development in East New York, Brooklyn.
