Yesterday evening, the Brooklyn Democratic Party proudly and overwhelmingly voted to nominate Sam Sutton as the Democratic New York State Senate candidate, who is now running to represent South Brooklyn’s District 22 in the May 20th Special Election.

Sutton, a life-long advocate and non-profit leader, is now officially contending to serve as a State Senator in his native Brooklyn District (encompassing the neighborhoods of Midwood, Flatbush, Borough Park, Madison, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay).

“We need someone who is going to fight for the right resources and take on the tough battles for our communities’ needs,” Party Chair Bichotte Hermelyn said in support of Sutton. “Sam has been a staple, and an inspiration for all of us, and has been instrumental in uplifting Brooklynites for decades–that’s why I’m elated for his unanimous nomination for State Senate, and look forward to working with him in Albany.”

“As co-leader of the Sephardic Community Federation (SCF), I have worked closely with local officials to advocate for our community and secure essential resources,” nominee Sam Sutton told the elated crowd. “I believe it’s time for me to contribute directly within government.

Given our community’s growth and challenges, we need a representative who is deeply rooted in our community and understands its dynamics. I am confident that my experience and dedication will allow me to effectively serve as our voice in the state legislature.”

The new Brooklyn Democratic Party nominee is contending against a Republican to fulfil the seat of Former Democratic Senator Simcha Felder, who vacated it last week after winning a Special City Council Election for the overarching 44th Council District last month.

Pursuant to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Proclamation of a Special Election issued on April 10th, the Brooklyn Democratic Party swiftly organized and held a transparent, efficient and inspiring special Meeting of the County Committee, and per Party Rules, convened the required quorum of Committee Members from Senate District 22 to unanimously approve Sam Sutton’s nomination.

Hon. Simcha Felder had held the seat for more than a decade, and the Brooklyn Democratic Party “deeply appreciates his dedicated advocacy for District 22 in Albany, as Felder translates that leadership to City Hall to further empower our communities,” said Party Chair Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn.
