IMMIGRANT HEALTH: Immigrant New Yorkers have a higher life expectancy compared to city residents born in the U.S., according to data released last week by the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Foreign-born city residents had an average lifespan of 83.5 years, compared to 79.9 years among U.S.-born residents. Immigrant communities were less likely to smoke and had lower rates of mortality linked to cancer or cardiovascular disease than people born in the U.S., city data showed. But they also faced greater barriers to getting health services; immigrants were less likely to have health insurance coverage or receive mental health care, according to the Health Department.
