DENGUE WARNING: The city and state health departments issued a health advisory on Friday warning of the risk of dengue virus to travelers returning from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Global cases of dengue, which is spread mainly by mosquitoes, have risen in the last five years, particularly in the Americas. Last year, 210 city residents and 123 people in the rest of the state tested positive for dengue after traveling to a warm climate mostly in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Clinicians are advised to take a detailed travel history of people suspected to have dengue, test for the virus and report suspected or confirmed cases.
