FEDERAL BUDGET CUTS: New York could lose 82,000 health and social services jobs next year if the federal government passes large-scale cuts to Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, according to a new estimate from the Commonwealth Fund and the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health. House Republicans are considering a combined $1.1 trillion across both programs in the next decade, but have not passed specific policy measures yet. If lawmakers pass the budget cuts, New York’s gross domestic product loss could amount to $10.5 billion, the report found.
REHAB REHAB: A large Upper East Side nursing home is undertaking renovations that will add private rooms and reduce the number of large multi-bed rooms. Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, a 499-bed facility on E. 79th St., submitted an application to the state Department of Health to undertake the $6.7 million refurbishment that will add 16 new single and semi-private rooms with en suite toilets while cutting the number of four-bed rooms. The facility, part of DeWitt Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Inc., will also increase the size of the physical and occupational therapy space, and includes a number of upgrades to laundry and bathrooms, according to a filing with the state.
