EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT EXPANSION: Mount Sinai South Nassau is opening its new, expanded emergency department today after spending $50 million and five years on renovations. The new addition, known as the Fennessy Family Emergency Department, is part of a major capital expansion at the health system’s Long Island flagship hospital. Wednesday’s unveiling is the first phase of the roll-out of the hospital’s new Feil Family Pavilion, a four-story medical center the rest of which will open in the coming months, according to the health system. The new pavilion was funded mostly through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant after Superstorm Sandy. The new emergency department was paid for in part by $10 million in donations.
MEDICAL RESPITE: The city is planning to create 24 new medical respite beds to increase space for homeless New Yorkers after they are discharged from the hospital, Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday. Medical respite beds offer unhoused individuals housing for up to 90 days after a medical event, and provide medical services such as wound care, IV infusions and physical therapy that aren’t offered in traditional shelters. The respite program, run by New York City Health + Hospitals, has served more than 1,400 patients through the end of last year. The administration expects that the new beds will serve 100 people annually.
