Ex-‘Good Morning America’ host parts with Yorkville penthouse for $5.6M

Former Good Morning America host Charles Gibson and his wife, Arlene, have sold their penthouse on East End Avenue for $5.6 million after two decades in the neighborhood, according to city property records that appeared Monday. The two bought the co-op apartment for $5.2 million in 2005.

The Gibsons first listed the apartment in early 2024 for about $7 million but decreased the asking price twice before the end of the summer. The sale closed May 1.

The three-bedroom features arched windows, four terraces, views of the East River and three wood-burning fireplaces, according to advertising materials. A storage unit and a staff room were transferred along with the apartment.

The co-op building has a full-time doorman, a fitness center and a bike room.

The Gibsons put down a Seattle address on the closing documents. Laurie Stolowitz and Joanne Wenig, the Compass agents who listed the property, did not respond to a request for comment by press time.

The buyers were Ann and George Clairmont, whose occupations could not be verified by press time.

Gibson started his time as a GMA host in 1987. He continued in the role until 2006, with a nine-month hiatus beginning in 1998. After his tenure as a morning host, he took over the evening slot as an anchor on ABC’s World News Tonight from 2006 to 2009 following the death of Peter Jennings.

In his time at the network, Gibson moderated the 2004 presidential debate between George W. Bush and John Kerry as well as the 2008 Democratic primary debate between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. In 2008 he was the first to interview then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin after she was named the Republican candidate for vice president.

In 1998 Arlene Gibson took over as headmistress at The Spence School, a private all-girls school off Madison Avenue. She announced her retirement less than a week before Charles Gibson left Good Morning America in 2006.
