LISTEN: Jessica Ramos Says NYC Can Do Better Than Another ‘Megalomaniac Mayor’

“What gets headlines is talking about Andrew Cuomo and isn’t that a really unfortunate state of affairs?” Jessica Ramos said in a wide-ranging conversation with hosts Katie Honan and Harry Siegel at the office of The City.

“And it’s unfortunate, because it creates kind of a hamster wheel and meanwhile, there are lots of honest, good people running. Do I think [the entry of Andrew Cuomo and Adrienne Adams into the race] takes away from my candidacy? I mean, we’re all candidates, so we all take away from each other.”

In the latest episode of the pod’s series of sitdown interviews with the Democratic mayoral candidates, Ramos also delved into her position as “a labor Democrat… in a lane of my own,” her “plan to call for a mental health emergency on day one of my mayoralty,” the city’s “new Gilded Age” and the battle for a casino license here (“Andrew Carnegie, who wasn’t as rich as Steve Cohen is today, by the way he built 2,500 public libraries”), and much more.

“I’ll tell you, I really welcomed the candidacy of Adrienne Adams. To me, there’s no difference between Andrew Cuomo, Eric Adams and Donald Trump. And a part of this, for me, has been a vindication for the borough of Queens,” Ramos said.

“I do not want that in 100, 200 years, when kids start Googling ‘famous public servants, elected officials from Queens’ and up pop these guys. So to me, there’s some poetic justice if people vote for two women from Queens who happen to be honest people who love New York and who want what’s best for our city.”
