Former Inter president Massimo Moratti reflects on the club’s Champions League campaign, draws parallels to the 2010 Treble-winning side, and shares his connection to New York.
Massimo Moratti, the iconic president who led Inter Milan to their historic treble in 2010, remains a beloved figure among Nerazzurri fans worldwide. In this exclusive interview, he discusses Inter’s recent triumph over Barcelona in the Champions League, the growing passion for soccer in the United States, and his personal ties to New York City — a hub for international Inter supporters.
First of all, what were your emotions after yesterday’s incredible Inter-Barcelona match?
«They were two truly magnificent games — both the first leg and the return. The one in Barcelona already felt like a masterpiece, hard to top. But that’s the beauty of football: it always finds a way to surprise you. Yesterday, these two teams gave us another unforgettable match».
You’re still seen, even across the ocean, as a major symbol of Inter — the president who led the club to the treble and their last Champions League title. You also mentioned having a strong connection to New York.
«It’s a very personal bond, actually: one of my daughters lives in New York. I really enjoy the city, and it’s always a pleasure to visit».
Have you noticed a growing passion for soccer among Americans — not just Italians — in New York? Especially with some big events coming to the U.S. soon?
«Yes, the passion for soccer in the U.S. has grown tremendously in recent years. In New York, we even have one of the most important Inter Clubs in the world. Soccer in general is gaining popularity, especially in a multicultural city like New York, which reflects so many different nations, not just Italy. It’s great to see people walking the streets proudly wearing the jerseys of their favorite teams».
Looking at Inter’s current run in the Champions League — do you think this team can go all the way like your Inter did?
«That’s the hope. When you reach the final, it always comes down to a few key moments, but Inter would absolutely deserve it. They got through a tough group and did so with real grit. That’s what the Champions League is all about — it’s never a smooth ride. There’s always a tough moment you have to overcome, and Inter handled that moment brilliantly».
Now there’s this semifinal against Barcelona, and it feels like history repeating itself — like the semifinal from 2010. Back then, you went on to beat Bayern Munich in the final. With this year’s final in Munich, does it all feel like a good omen?
«Yes, there’s definitely a sense of optimism. But if yesterday’s match taught us anything, it’s that in football you can never let your guard down. You have to stay sharp right up to the final whistle. That’s exactly what Inter did yesterday, and they’ll need to do it again in the final».
Is there a player — or more than one — on this Inter squad who reminds you of someone from the 2010 team in terms of charisma or impact?
«I don’t want to make direct comparisons that might take away from either the current players or those from the past — it’s always tricky to do that. But if I had to name one standout from this semifinal, it would be Acerbi. Scoring the equalizer in the final seconds — that was a defining moment. To me, he beautifully represents the character and strength of this current Inter side».
