Midtown health system NYU Langone has named physician and cancer researcher Dr. Alec Kimmelman as its next CEO, the organization said Monday.
Kimmelman will step into the new roles of CEO and dean of NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine on September 1, according to the health system. The physician researcher, confirmed in a unanimous vote by NYU’s board of trustees on Monday, will replace Dr. Robert Grossman, who has served as chief executive and dean since 2007. Grossman said earlier this year that he planned to retire this summer.
“I am humbled and excited to be the next CEO and dean of NYU Langone and appreciate the confidence the board of trustees and the search committee have placed in me,” Kimmelman said in a statement. “I look forward to building upon Dr. Grossman’s astonishing record of achievements that have catapulted this institution to be one of the top-ranked health systems in the nation.”
Kimmelman joined NYU Langone in 2016 as chair of radiation oncology, and was appointed director of the Perlmutter Cancer Center in 2023. As director of the cancer center, Kimmelman oversaw the launch of the Center for Molecular Oncology, which uses genomic sequencing to diagnose cancers and personalize treatment. His research focuses on the biology of pancreatic cancer.
The new executive joins NYU Langone as it continues to expand its network. The health system, which brought in more than $14.2 billion in revenue last year, acquired its seventh inpatient location, NYU Langone – Suffolk on Long Island, and has more than 320 outpatient facilities.
The appointment comes almost a year after Grossman and Kenneth Langone, chair of NYU’s board of trustees, announced their plans to retire this August. After he steps down, Grossman will assume a new role as executive vice president to the board of trustees, according to the health system.
