New York’s public transit systems connect people, places and economies.
These connections happen in communities throughout New York and public transit systems do this work every day. These systems and their employees are critical to the well-being of all New Yorkers, whether they are transit users or not. New York’s transit systems provide access to jobs, education and healthcare, fueling local economies and reducing the impact on the environment. Today, more than ever, we need support for stronger State funding for public transit.
From Buffalo to Babylon, to Poughkeepsie and Syracuse, transit systems are the lifeblood of our state’s economy. They are relied on by customers and hundreds of partners – major employers like hospitals, banks, supermarket chains, colleges and universities, school districts and more. All of them look to transit systems to get their employees, their students and their volunteers to work on time every day. Transit systems do this work seven days a week, early in the day and late at night, keeping our communities going and prospering.
Despite these clear benefits, New York State funding does not meet the growing demand for transit services or provide for necessary infrastructure upgrades. The New York Public Transit Association represents transit systems, manufacturers and suppliers across the state, and we are urging state lawmakers to increase state operating assistance and capital funding for public transit systems in the FY 2025-26 budget.
Providing a high-quality transportation network requires significant investment that we need now to capitalize on the success of our transit systems and the work they do. Transit systems need dedicated, sustainable revenues to provide the essential services their communities need and to support the state’s initiatives for climate change, affordable housing and economic growth. None of these goals can be achieved without thriving transit systems.
It is time to fully fund our state’s transit systems — for our communities, for our economy, and for our future.
Cordially,
James Morrell
President, New York Public Transit Association
