A growing group of spa-goers is leaving the thermal pools, steam rooms, and saunas of Bathhouse feeling a little less than clean and/or tranquil.
According to a recent report from Curbed, both of the spa chain’s NYC locations—on North 10th in Williamsburg and West 22nd in Flatiron—are beginning to wrack up a concerning amount of complaints regarding the company’s sanitary practices and overall quality of amenities provided. Attendees and former employees have been lighting up Reddit with some weird, wild, and, frankly, horrifying accounts of spotting mold, contracting UTIs, and being unable to unsmell some of the odors they encountered.
The Williamsburg location, in particular, appears to be at the center of most complaints filed via Reddit or, more formally, with 311 and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which has received 17 sanitary calls about the spa since 2022. Six of those calls were reportedly made within just the last few weeks. In their defense, a Bathhouse rep claimed the spa had committed no violations during their latest Health Department inspection on New Year’s Eve, which was prompted by several complaints made in December 2024. “The health and safety of our customers is our number one priority and always has been,” the rep said in a statement.
Bathhouse opened in the Williamsburg Soda Factory building in late-2019 and managed to survive social distancing protocols and lockdowns long enough to develop something of a cult following. Despite the complaints, the company managed to add new locations in Manhattan and Chicago, and is readying a crown for its Brooklyn outpost, which is soon to be furnished with a rooftop pool.
