Trump Considering Third Term and War Over Greenland

Donald Trump routinely says things that are bonkers, but he made some particularly wild new claims in his NBC News interview with Kristen Welker over the weekend — including his most alarming comments yet about ignoring presidential term limits. Below are the most notable things he said.

Trump said “there are methods” for him to seek a third term, and that “I’m not joking”

Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of running for an unconstitutional third term as president, but it’s never clear how seriously he’s actually considering it, and some of his allies have insisted the president — who has likened himself to a king — is joking. Asked about it in the NBC interview, Trump insisted “I’m not joking.” He just says it’s too early to make that call.

“A lot of people want me to do it,” he said. “But, I mean, I basically tell them we have a long way to go, you know, it’s very early in the administration. I’m focused on the current.”

But Trump also sounded convinced that he could have another term if he wanted one:

When asked whether he has been presented with plans to allow him to seek a third term, Trump said, “There are methods which you could do it.” NBC News asked about a possible scenario in which Vice President JD Vance would run for office and then pass the role to Trump. Trump responded that “that’s one” method. “But there are others, too,” Trump added.

To be clear, there aren’t multiple methods for Trump to be able to serve a third term. There’s only one method: win another election after repealing the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which says “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Some of Trump’s allies support making that change, but there’s no chance that will happen.

When Welker asked Trump why he’d want another term, he replied, “I like working.”

Trump also presumably wasn’t joking when he said Sunday night his third term would actually be his fourth term:

Trump suggested he could take Greenland by force

The White House just botched an attempt to meaningfully advance Trump’s obsession with somehow obtaining Greenland, so Welker asked him about that, too. “We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100 percent,” Trump said. And he added that “I never take military force off the table, but I think there’s a good possibility that we could do it without military force.”

“I don’t take anything off the table,” he repeated. He also said “I don’t care” what message that sends to Vladimir Putin.

On Friday, J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha, travelled way north to visit a U.S. Space Force base in Pituffik, Greenland. That trip was put together after an earlier plan for Usha Vance to visit Greenland fell apart after it was opposed by Greenlanders. So the Vances went to Pituffik Space Base, where the vice president claimed China and Russia were a threat to Greenland, insisted America would take much better care of the semiautonomous territory than Denmark, and explained that “we can’t just ignore the president’s desires” to possess it.

Vance was also repeatedly asked by reporters in Pituffik whether the U.S. was considering using force to seize the territory, and he said he didn’t that would be necessary. Trump now at least wants everyone to think he’s willing to go that route.

He said he “couldn’t care less” about car prices go up

With his new auto tariffs just days away, Welker also asked Trump about the recent report that he had warned U.S. automaker CEOs not raise car prices in response to the tariffs. He denied it:

“No, I never said that. I couldn’t care less if they raise prices, because people are going to start buying American-made cars.” Trump continued, “I couldn’t care less. I hope they raise their prices, because if they do, people are gonna buy American-made cars. We have plenty.” Asked if he was concerned about car prices going up, Trump said, “No, I couldn’t care less, because if the prices on foreign cars go up, they’re going to buy American cars.”

Right after the interview, a White House spokesperson told NBC that Trump was only talking about new foreign car prices.
