THE CITY will be co-hosting the second of two official debates for mayor ahead of the June 24 primary, taking place on June 12 beginning at 7 p.m., with partners Spectrum News/NY1 and WNYC/Gothamist, New York York Law School’s Center for City and State Law, the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, Museum of the City of New York and John Jay College.
Sponsored by the New York City Campaign Finance Board and moderated by NY1’s Errol Louis, WNYC’s Brian Lehrer and THE CITY’s Katie Honan, the debate will feature the Democratic “leading contenders,” as determined by fundraising or poll performance.
There will be no Republican primary for mayor, and incumbent mayor Eric Adams is not competing in the Democratic primary as he prepares to run on an independent ballot line in the fall.
The Campaign Finance Board says City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Comptroller Brad Lander, Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, state Sen. Zellnor Myrie, former Comptroller Scott Stringer and businessman Whitney Tilson will appear on the debate stage.
Candidates Jessica Ramos, Michael Blake, Paperboy Prince and Selma Bartholomew will also be on the ballot
Cuomo has avoided going head to head against rival candidates since declaring his run for mayor, but as a participant in New York’s public matching funds program he is required to be part of the debates. He will be taking the debate stage for just the second time during the campaign. The first debate for mayor, sponsored by NBC4, will take place on June 4 at 7 p.m.
THE CITY will also be co-hosting the second Democratic debate for comptroller on June 10.
Early voting in the primary begins on June 14, using a ranked-choice ballot allowing voters to select up to five candidates.
