Who Gets Trump’s Tesla After the Elon Musk Divorce?

Just how serious is the the fight between Elon Musk and Donald Trump? Pretty serious, judging from the DOGE chief’s decision to accuse the president of blocking the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files to avoid incriminating himself as a pedophile. But if you need more evidence, we have now reached the point where the pair are divvying up things they bought during their bromance.

Fox News’s Peter Doocy reported on Friday morning that the red Tesla Trump bought with much fanfare in March “is either going to be given away or sold off.”

An anonymous senior White House official told several outlets that Trump is merely “considering” getting rid of the car, but Doocy’s report made the car’s future, and the split in general, sound final.

“We are told that it was about a month that Elon Musk was wearing thin on Trump,” Doocy said. “So this was not a sudden exit and blow up, there was about a month that he was ‘wearing thin’ — the president’s word.”

Trump selling the car is totally performative, just like its purchase. On March 11, Trump announced on Truth Social that he would buy a new Tesla “as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk.” At the time, anti-Trump protesters were vandalizing Tesla vehicles and dealerships, and shares in the electric vehicle company had plunged more than 50 percent from a mid-December peak, presumably due to the CEO’s political antics.

Later that day, Trump staged a Tesla commercial outside the White House, inspecting a lineup of five vehicles and touting their features with Musk and his young son in tow. Trump pointed to a red Model S that retails for more than $100,000, saying, “The one I like is that one, and I want the same color.”

Trump has never actually driven the car, so it’s not like he to dump it because it brings back too many memories, Trump noted during the event that he hasn’t been behind the wheel in many years; as a rich guy, Trump has had a driver for a long time, and all presidents are forbidden from driving on public roads by the Secret Service. “I’m going to have it at the White House and I’m going to let my staff use it,” Trump said.

On Thursday, reporters spotted Trump’s Tesla with Florida plates parked in its usual spot on West Executive Avenue at the presidential residence. It was still there on Friday.

The real question here is what happens to the Tesla vehicles that Sean Hannity and many rank-and-file MAGA supporters bought in solidarity with Trump and Musk. While the president probably doesn’t care about his car, even many people who can afford to spend $43,000 to $200,000 on a brand new Tesla can’t suddenly sell it off it because the girls are fighting. In a divorce, it’s often the kids who are hardest hit.
