THE CITY becomes The City Reporter

NEW YORK, NY (May 29, 2026) – The leading nonprofit newsroom covering New York City has changed its name to emphasize the importance of professional journalists in an age of algorithms and artificial intelligence.

Founded in 2019 as THE CITY, the 25-person media outlet has won multiple awards for its coverage of politics and society in the country’s largest metropolis. Its reporting has frequently had an impact on policy and practice in New York, sparking investigations, leading to indictments, shutting down sweatshops, and more.

The City Reporter will continue in this proud tradition, with its new name affirming the indispensable value of the professional skills of journalists.

“A chatbot doesn’t know how to conduct an interview that is both compassionate and skeptical,” said Carroll Bogert, CEO of The City Reporter. “It can’t stand outside the immigration courts at 26 Federal Plaza, talking with people as they’re whisked away by federal agents.”

Bogert added that the newsroom might use artificial intelligence to sift through thousands of pages of public records. But only a reporter can go down to the courthouse and wrest those documents from an office clerk – as happened in a major investigation into migrant arrests released by The City Reporter earlier this week.

“We believe in reporters who have the experience to ferret out information that powerful people don’t want us to know,” said Richard Kim, editor-in-chief of The City Reporter. “Our new name tells the world what we stand for.”

The new name was selected after six months of brainstorming sessions, brand consultants, focus groups, and online polls. The process reached a consensus around The City Reporter as the name that best conveys the values of the nonprofit newsroom.

The newsroom’s beloved mascot, a pigeon named Nellie, has not flown the coop. She remains part of The City Reporter’s logo.

Our nonprofit newsroom relies on donations from readers to sustain our local reporting and keep it free for all New Yorkers. Donate to THE CITY today.
