AARP New York Applauds Governor Hochul’s Executive Order Protecting Ratepayers from Data Center Energy Costs

Albany, NY — AARP New York State Director Beth Finkel issued the following statement today in response to Governor Kathy Hochul’s executive order to create the nation’s first moratorium on new hyperscale data centers.

“New Yorkers should not have to pay higher utility bills to support the enormous energy demands of large data centers.

AARP New York applauds Governor Hochul’s Executive Order 62 for helping ensure that the costs of powering AI-driven development are borne by the companies creating that demand, not by residential ratepayers already facing an affordability crisis.

As New York’s energy needs continue to surge, protecting consumers and keeping utility bills affordable must remain at the center of New York’s energy future.”
