Listen: This Alt-Weekly Captured the Chaos of 1990s NYC

It should only be people whose writing we really like and who are really good at it, and even better if they’re really passionate about it — and what they’re writing about is not so important as the fact that they’re writing it. It’s their voice, their authentic voice and they’re interested and knowledgeable and good writers.

Because we had such a tiny editorial staff, I didn’t want us to be bogged down putting commas in people’s work. As editors everywhere know, it’s just the worst part of being an editor. The greatest part is reading a submission from some writer and saying, “oh man, this is great, yeah, let’s run with this.” So you’re always looking for those people.
