In sports, as in life, victories always have many fathers, while defeats are usually orphans.
Inter’s Scudetto triumph—clinched with three games to spare—has, in my view, one clear name behind it: Cristian Chivu.
Appointed last summer to replace Simone Inzaghi—who had led the Nerazzurri for four seasons, winning one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia trophies, three Supercoppa Italiana titles, and reaching two Champions League finals—Chivu faced an incredibly difficult task.
On one hand, he had to rebuild identity and confidence within Inter’s core group, which had ended Inzaghi’s final season in the most painful way possible. After dreaming of a historic treble, they finished with “zero titles,” as José Mourinho famously put it.
On the other hand, Chivu had to overcome the initial skepticism surrounding him. After all, he was taking charge of the strongest team in Serie A with only a handful of professional coaching appearances under his belt.
And that skepticism wasn’t limited to pundits and fans—it was present inside the locker room as well. Questions about his ability to handle pressure in a demanding and wounded environment were shared across the board.
Yet Chivu didn’t just meet expectations—he exceeded them. He won the league convincingly against some of the most respected managers in Italian football: Massimiliano Allegri at Milan, Antonio Conte at Napoli, Gian Piero Gasperini at Roma, Maurizio Sarri at Lazio, and even Stefano Pioli at Fiorentina—not to mention Luciano Spalletti at Juventus.
On paper, all of them seemed more experienced and better prepared than him. Who didn’t think Inter had taken a major gamble by entrusting such a competitive project to a rookie coach?
Instead, from day one, Chivu worked with seriousness and dedication, quickly earning the respect of his players and, month after month, the recognition of critics.
Win after win, the team’s confidence grew exponentially. But Chivu’s greatest achievement wasn’t just turning victory into a habit rather than a possibility—it was how he managed adversity.
The defeat against Juventus under Tudor at the Allianz Stadium, the two losses in the Milan derbies, the Champions League elimination at the hands of Bodo/Glimt—after every setback, no matter how painful, Chivu managed to steady the ship and get Inter back on course.
All the way to the finish line: a Scudetto that now seems inevitable, but that, back in August, felt incredibly distant.
Now, as Inter await to see whether they can complete a domestic Double—reminiscent of Allegri’s best early years at Juventus—Chivu stands as the season’s true winner, alongside the club’s management, which went all-in on the right man.
The hardest part comes next. Winning is tough, but repeating is the mark of greatness. Still, the young Chivu looks every bit like a future elite manager.

La vittoria di Christian Chivu
Nello sport, come nella vita, le vittorie hanno sempre tanti padri, mentre le sconfitte sono solitamente orfane.
La vittoria dello scudetto, celebrata dall’Inter con tre giornate di anticipo, per quanto mi riguarda ha un nome e cognome: Christian Chivu.
Arrivato in estate per sostituire Simone Inzaghi, che era stato il condottiero dei nerazzurri per quattro stagioni, nelle quali aveva vinto uno scudetto, due Coppe Italia, tre Supercoppe Italiane e, soprattutto, aveva raggiunto per ben due volte la Finale di Champions League, Chivu era chiamato ad un compito difficilissimo.
Da una parte doveva ricostruire identità ed autostima nel gruppo storico interista, che fino alla fine, nell’ultima stagione di Inzaghi, aveva coltivato il sogno del Triplete per poi chiudere nella maniera più amara, con Zero Tituli (cit. Special One).
Dall’altra doveva vincere la diffidenza iniziale nei suoi confronti, essendo arrivato a sedersi sulla panchina della squadra più forte della Serie A con appena una manciata di panchine da pro.
Badate bene: quando parlo di diffidenza iniziale non mi riferisco solo a quella di commentatori (a vario titolo) e tifosi, ma anche e soprattutto alla diffidenza dei suoi giocatori. Perché le perplessità del mondo del calcio erano le stesse dello spogliatoio e riguardavano la sua capacità di saper reggere le pressioni in una piazza esigente e per giunta ferita.
Chivu ha stravinto il campionato contro mostri sacri delle panchine: Allegri al Mila, Conte al Napoli, Gasperini alla Roma, Sarri alla Lazio, persino Pioli alla Fiorentina…sulla carta erano tutti più bravi, esperti e preparati di lui. Per non parlare di Spalletti da quando si è seduto sulla panchina della Juventus.
Chi non ha pensato che la società nerazzurra avesse fatto un pericoloso azzardo in estate affidando, in un contesto tanto competitivo, la rinascita dell’Inter ad un allenatore neofita?
Ed invece Chivu ha lavorato, dal primo giorno, con serietà e dedizione, ottenendo da subito la stima dei suoi ragazzi e, mese dopo mese, la considerazione della critica.
Vittoria dopo vittoria la consapevolezza e l’autostima della squadra sono cresciuti esponenzialmente, ma la grande impresa di Chivu non è stata tanto nella capacità di far diventare la vittoria una consuetudine piuttosto che un’opzione, ma nella gestione delle criticità.
La sconfitta nella gara d’andata contro la Juventus di Tudor allo Stadium, le due sconfitte nei derby di campionato, l’eliminazione per mano del Bodo in Champions League: dopo ogni scivolone, per quanto rovinoso e doloroso sia stato, Chivu è riuscito a riportare la barra dritta ritrovando la miglior strada di navigazione.
Fino al traguardo, vale a dire la vittoria di uno scudetto che oggi sembra scontato a tutti ma che, è bene ricordarlo, ad agosto sembrava veramente lontano.
In attesa di sapere se la stagione dell’Inter si concluderà con un Double degno del miglior Allegri dei primi tempi bianconeri, oggi Chivu è il grande trionfatore stagionale, e con lui la dirigenza nerazzurra che ha fatto all in sull’uomo giusto.
Adesso verrà la parte più difficile, perché vincere è tosto ma ripetersi è da grandi. Ma il giovane (allenatore) Chivu sembra davvero quanto più vicino ad un prospetto di grande allenatore.
